Work/ Working Go/Going Do/Doing

Work/Go/Be etc. are infinitives. The infinitive firm of a verb is a verb’s most basic form, it can also usually be preceded with the word ‘to.’

We use the infinitives will/can/must etc.:

Infinitive Example
Will Lisa will be opening her own shop
Shall I shall let you know tomorrow.
Might She might not be able to attend.
May Ken may listen to his parents instead of us.
Can He can drive us to the park.
Could Oliver could bake the cakes for the event.
Must They must be told about this.
Should We shouldchoose this sofa.
Would I hope they would enjoy the holiday surprise.

We use the infinitive do/does/did:

Infinitive Example
Do/Does (Present simple) Do you want to go to dinner? I don’t understand the rules. She does want to come. Mary doesn’t have time tomorrow.
Did (Past Simple) Karen did wave goodbye. I didn’t have time to complete the form.

We use the infinitive to work/to go/to be etc. (to + infinitive)

To + infinitive Example
I’m going to … I’m going to order the chicken. What are they going to cook?
I have to … I have to leave now We all have to leave.
I want to … Do you want to go swimming? They didn’t want to come swimming with us
I would like to … I would like to buy a new handbag. Would you like to join them?
I used to … Ellen used to watch EastEnders.

We use the infinitives working/going/playing etc.

Verb + Continuous form Example
Am/is/are + ing (Present Continuous) Please wait for me; I’m finishing the work now. Kelly isn’t running for the race. What time are we arriving?
Was/Were + ing (Past continuous) She was vomiting, so we booked an appointment. They were doing the gardening for me.
