Forming Questions (Who/ What/ Why/ Where/ When/ Which)

When forming questions beginning with (Who…? / What…? / Why…? / Where…? / When…? / Which…?), they usually have prepositions towards the end of the question – REMEMBER prepositions are a word class that specifies relationships between nouns, pronouns and other words in a sentence or question. For example:

  • Where is that bag from?’    ‘It is from Debenhams.’
  • ‘We are playing football.’     ‘Why are you playing without me?’
  • There’s a parcel waiting for you.’ ‘Is there? Where is it?’
  • Who do we appoint team leader to?’     ’To Timothy.’
  • Wich club should he sing with?’     ’With Manchester United.’

We also ask questions that end with the word like, for example ‘What was the game like?’ In cases like this, there is a shift in the function of the word ‘like’ as it no longer acts as a verb, but a preposition instead.

  • A: There is a new English teacher in school.

B: What is she like? Is she a good teacher?

A: I am not sure yet, she will be teaching me next lesson.

  • A: Did you enjoy the spa? What were the treatments like?

B: They were amazing.
