Must is a modal verb.
must + infinitive
Must = When must is used in a sentence it is used to show necessity or obligation to do something. This means that the action needs to be done.

Must not = Mustn’t = This means that it is necessary not to do something because it is the wrong thing to do.

For the past we use had to… not must
Example: I had to rush to work because I was late. (not I must rush to work because I was late.)

Don’t need to
When we say I don’t need to something it means that it is not necessary to do it.
Examples:

| I don’t need to buy a new bag for school. |
| We don’t need to go home now. |
| You don’t need to shout at me. |
| They don’t need to help me cook dinner. |
| You don’t need to take your brother swimming. |
| I don’t need to cook dinner tonight because we are ordering food. |
You can also say I don’t have to instead of I don’t need to (to show that it is not necessary to do the action)
Examples:

| I don’t have to sleep early tonight. |
| I don’t have to help my mum in the kitchen. |
| We don’t have to bake a cake for dad’s birthday. |
| They don’t have to drive themselves to the airport. |
