The 11 Plus landscape

Every board has its own character.

The 11 Plus is not a single exam. It is a family of assessments — each with its own format, style and rhythm. Preparation that ignores the difference does children a disservice. Here is what we cover.

Choose the board your child’s target school uses:

Board 01

Mixed-section format

CEM Assessment

CEM papers blend English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning within mixed-section tests. Vocabulary depth and working pace under pressure matter as much as method.

Board 02

Predictable papers

GL Assessment

GL uses separate papers for each subject, with recognisable question patterns. Structured preparation pays off — speed, accuracy and familiarity with each question type are the levers we work on.

Board 03

Online adaptive

ISEB Common Pre-Test

The ISEB Common Pre-Test is online and adaptive — questions get harder or easier as the child answers. On-screen pacing, careful reading and confidence under timing are essential.

School-specific papers

Independent School Papers

Many independent schools set their own entrance papers in addition to (or instead of) the ISEB Pre-Test. We tailor preparation to the specific school once we know your target.

What we cover

Four strands. Every strand built up carefully.

Every 11 Plus paper draws on a combination of these four. We work each one as its own discipline.

Strand 01

English

Comprehension is the foundation — reading closely, inferring meaning, picking up tone, and working with unfamiliar vocabulary under timed conditions. Spelling, punctuation, grammar and creative or persuasive writing follow where the assessment requires it.

Topics: comprehension, vocabulary, SPaG, creative writing, persuasive writing, tone & inference

Strand 02

Maths

11 Plus Maths goes beyond standard Key Stage 2 content. Multi-step problems, mental arithmetic under timing, fractions, ratios and percentages, and applied reasoning all appear. We build fluency first, then layer in exam strategy.

Topics: number, fractions & decimals, percentages, ratio, algebra, geometry, data, multi-step problem solving

Strand 03

Verbal Reasoning

Verbal Reasoning is its own discipline. Children meet 21 classic GL question types — coded words, letter sequences, analogies, antonyms, synonyms, hidden words and more. Familiarity with each type, alongside strong vocabulary, is what moves scores.

Topics: cloze, coded words, letter sequences, analogies, antonyms & synonyms, word categories, logic puzzles

Strand 04

Non-Verbal Reasoning

Non-Verbal Reasoning works with shapes, patterns and spatial relationships rather than words. The question types are systematic — rotations, reflections, odd-one-out, series, matrices, nets and 3D shapes. Practice on each type builds visual fluency.

Topics: odd-one-out, series, matrices, rotations, reflections, analogies, nets, 3D shape, codes

01 / Who This Is For

Who 11 Plus tuition helps.

Parents preparing a child for grammar or independent school entry usually come to us when they notice one of these:

  • An exam is on the horizonCEM, GL, ISEB, or an independent school paper is coming up in Year 6.
  • They’re working hard but timing or accuracy slips under exam conditionsThe content is there. The pace isn’t.
  • Strong on one strand, lost on anotherGreat at Maths but struggling with Verbal Reasoning, or vice versa.
  • Vocabulary depth or comprehension is holding them backCommon in CEM and ISEB prep.
  • The target school is decided but the right preparation route isn’t clear yetWe confirm which board, then build the plan.
02 / What May Be Happening

Same target school. Different journey.

Two children with the same target school can need completely different preparation.

  • One may need vocabulary depth for CEM’s mixed-section papers.
  • Another may need Maths fluency and exam timing for GL’s separate papers.
  • A third may need Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning question-type familiarity for ISEB.

More past papers won’t fix a gap we haven’t named yet.

03 / Free Assessment

Confirm the right route before lessons begin.

The assessment is a short, guided check — done in person at our Batley centre, or online for families further afield.

By the end, we can tell you which board your child’s target school uses, where the gaps are across the four strands, and what to fix first.

04 / How tuition follows

After the assessment, tuition follows the board.

The assessment shows which board, which strands need work, and what to fix first. Your child’s tutor then works from that plan — not a generic 11 Plus pack. Our DBS-checked 11 Plus tutors follow the board-specific plan, so your child practises against the format they will actually sit.

  • Secure the foundations — vocabulary, mental arithmetic, question-type familiarity across all four strands.
  • Build exam stamina — timed papers in the correct format, exam technique, and the calm confidence to attempt every question.
05 / Before You Decide

What you’ll know by the end.

  • Which assessment board your child’s target school uses.
  • Where the gaps are across the four strands.
  • A recommended preparation plan — if it would actually help.
  • No pressure to continue either way.
06 / Questions

The questions parents ask most.

What is the 11 Plus and which assessment boards exist?

The 11 Plus is the entrance exam used by grammar schools and many independent schools for Year 7 entry. The two main boards are CEM (Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring) and GL Assessment. Independent schools often use the ISEB Common Pre-Test, and some set their own bespoke papers. Papers test English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning in varying combinations.

What is the difference between CEM and GL Assessment?

CEM papers tend to mix subjects within a single test and emphasise vocabulary and speed under pressure. GL Assessment uses separate papers for each subject with a more predictable question style. Preparation strategies differ — we tailor lessons to the format used by your child’s target school.

What is the ISEB Common Pre-Test?

The ISEB Common Pre-Test is an online, adaptive assessment used by many leading independent schools as part of Year 7 (and sometimes Year 9) entry. It covers English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. Because it is adaptive, question difficulty adjusts to the child’s responses, which makes pacing and accuracy under timed conditions essential.

When should 11 Plus preparation begin?

Most families begin in Year 4, giving sixteen to eighteen months of paced preparation before assessments in the autumn of Year 6. Where families come to us later, we build a tailored intensive plan focused on the specific board and target school.

Do you prepare children for independent school entrance exams?

Yes. We support preparation for the ISEB Common Pre-Test and for the bespoke entrance papers used by individual independent schools — including English comprehension, creative writing, Maths and reasoning sections. We discuss your target school during the free assessment and tailor lessons to its specific format.

Is the 11 Plus assessment really free?

Yes. There is no payment to book the assessment and no obligation to take tuition afterwards. We use it to find your child’s gaps, confirm the right preparation route, and explain the clearest next step before any paid lessons begin.

How much does 11 Plus tuition cost?

11 Plus tuition starts from £14.50 per hour in a group of 4–5, £22.50 in a small group of 2–3, or £39.50 one-to-one. Exact rate confirmed after the free assessment.

About your teacher

Mr G Dabhad — leading your child’s 11 Plus preparation.

Improve Tuition was founded in 2007 by Mr G Dabhad — a qualified teacher with QTS and BA Hons. He reviews each child’s 11 Plus assessment and guides the board-specific plan your child’s tutor will follow, across CEM, GL Assessment, ISEB Common Pre-Test and independent school papers.

The approach has stayed the same since the centre opened: find the gap first, then teach it.
