The 11 Plus landscape
The 11 Plus is not a single exam. It is a family of assessments — each with its own format, style and rhythm. Preparation that ignores the difference does children a disservice. Here is what we cover.

Predictable papers
GL uses separate papers for each subject, with recognisable question patterns. Structured preparation pays off — speed, accuracy and familiarity with each question type are the levers we work on.

Online adaptive
The ISEB Common Pre-Test is online and adaptive — questions get harder or easier as the child answers. On-screen pacing, careful reading and confidence under timing are essential.

School-specific papers
Many independent schools set their own entrance papers in addition to (or instead of) the ISEB Pre-Test. We tailor preparation to the specific school once we know your target.

Every 11 Plus paper draws on a combination of these four. We work each one as its own discipline.
Strand 01
Comprehension is the foundation — reading closely, inferring meaning, picking up tone, and working with unfamiliar vocabulary under timed conditions. Spelling, punctuation, grammar and creative or persuasive writing follow where the assessment requires it.
Topics: comprehension, vocabulary, SPaG, creative writing, persuasive writing, tone & inference
Strand 02
11 Plus Maths goes beyond standard Key Stage 2 content. Multi-step problems, mental arithmetic under timing, fractions, ratios and percentages, and applied reasoning all appear. We build fluency first, then layer in exam strategy.
Topics: number, fractions & decimals, percentages, ratio, algebra, geometry, data, multi-step problem solving
Strand 03
Verbal Reasoning is its own discipline. Children meet 21 classic GL question types — coded words, letter sequences, analogies, antonyms, synonyms, hidden words and more. Familiarity with each type, alongside strong vocabulary, is what moves scores.
Topics: cloze, coded words, letter sequences, analogies, antonyms & synonyms, word categories, logic puzzles
Strand 04
Non-Verbal Reasoning works with shapes, patterns and spatial relationships rather than words. The question types are systematic — rotations, reflections, odd-one-out, series, matrices, nets and 3D shapes. Practice on each type builds visual fluency.
Topics: odd-one-out, series, matrices, rotations, reflections, analogies, nets, 3D shape, codes

Book your free assessmentParents preparing a child for grammar or independent school entry usually come to us when they notice one of these:
Two children with the same target school can need completely different preparation.
More past papers won’t fix a gap we haven’t named yet.
The assessment is a short, guided check — done in person at our Batley centre, or online for families further afield.
By the end, we can tell you which board your child’s target school uses, where the gaps are across the four strands, and what to fix first.
The assessment shows which board, which strands need work, and what to fix first. Your child’s tutor then works from that plan — not a generic 11 Plus pack. Our DBS-checked 11 Plus tutors follow the board-specific plan, so your child practises against the format they will actually sit.
The 11 Plus is the entrance exam used by grammar schools and many independent schools for Year 7 entry. The two main boards are CEM (Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring) and GL Assessment. Independent schools often use the ISEB Common Pre-Test, and some set their own bespoke papers. Papers test English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning in varying combinations.
CEM papers tend to mix subjects within a single test and emphasise vocabulary and speed under pressure. GL Assessment uses separate papers for each subject with a more predictable question style. Preparation strategies differ — we tailor lessons to the format used by your child’s target school.
The ISEB Common Pre-Test is an online, adaptive assessment used by many leading independent schools as part of Year 7 (and sometimes Year 9) entry. It covers English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. Because it is adaptive, question difficulty adjusts to the child’s responses, which makes pacing and accuracy under timed conditions essential.
Most families begin in Year 4, giving sixteen to eighteen months of paced preparation before assessments in the autumn of Year 6. Where families come to us later, we build a tailored intensive plan focused on the specific board and target school.
Yes. We support preparation for the ISEB Common Pre-Test and for the bespoke entrance papers used by individual independent schools — including English comprehension, creative writing, Maths and reasoning sections. We discuss your target school during the free assessment and tailor lessons to its specific format.
Yes. There is no payment to book the assessment and no obligation to take tuition afterwards. We use it to find your child’s gaps, confirm the right preparation route, and explain the clearest next step before any paid lessons begin.
